As for Model/Rig scaling, that's easy, no root bone necessary. Click in empty space to bring up model bone (black hidden bone, also takes control of unassigned cp's) while holding the ctrl key down (pc) translate, scale or rotate with the manipulators and the whole model (all cp's and bones) will respond. I also translated the model so it stands on 0 on the y axis. (MS)
