SEQUENCE 3_02 - "MOUNTAIN"

3_02_01 EXT. OZ – BADLANDS - DAY

The sun hangs in the sky, huge and merciless.

TIN OWL, STRAW BEAR, GREEN MONKEY, and TIN GIRL trudge across BADLANDS. They walk in silence, each contemplating their own situation.

3_02_02 STRAW BEAR 263 Well, we have escaped the big woman, to be sure but we still wear these awful forms that the cruel Yookoohoo gave us.

3_02_03 GREEN MONKEY 263 How are we going to become ourselves again?

3_02_04 STRAW BEAR

"Endeavor to preserve." I heard that in a movie once.

3_02_05 TIN OWL, STRAW BEAR, GREEN MONKEY, and TIN GIRL are confronted by MOUNTAIN.

3_02_06 TIN OWL standing on TIN GIRL’s shoulder, looks up at the steep climb.

TIN OWL Uh, uh. There's no way around. I guess, eh, we'll have to climb over it?

TIN GIRL (perky)

Over it, it is! Come on.

TIN OWL glances at TIN GIRL, smiles.

3_02_06a "Can It Be True?" song

3_02_07 TIN OWL, STRAW BEAR, GREEN MONKEY, and TIN GIRL start climbing up MOUNTAIN.

3_02_08 STRAW BEAR (hopefully)

Ah... At least... Ah, it's not slippery... And no rain in sight.

3_02_09 A large raindrop splats down on TIN OWL's head. He looks annoyed.

TIN OWL Right as rain, straw-head.

3_02_10 STRAW BEAR smiles sheepishly.

3_02_11 TIN OWL, STRAW BEAR, GREEN MONKEY, and TIN GIRL continue to climb over the rocks.

3_02_12 GREEN MONKEY 264 I’m hungry.

3_02_13 TIN OWL hovers over STRAW BEAR and GREEN MONKEY.

TIN OWL 264-02 Think of something else.

GREEN MONKEY 264-03 Like what?

STRAW BEAR 264-04 Like... Like something to take your mind off of your problems.

TIN OWL 264-05 For instance?

3_02_14 A moment, while STRAW BEAR grasps an idea.

STRAW BEAR 264-06 Where does straw come from?

3_02_15 A moment of silence while TIN OWL and GREEN MONKEY ponder Straw Bear's suggestion.

3_02_16 GREEN MONKEY 264-07 I’m hungry.

3_02_17 TIN OWL, STRAW BEAR, GREEN MONKEY, and TIN GIRL trudge on across bleak landscape.

3_02_18 TIN OWL, perched on TIN GIRL’s shoulder, has his eyes shut against the sun. OS Straw Bear makes a disconsolate sound.

TIN OWL (not opening his eyes) 264-08 What?

3_02_19 STRAW BEAR 264-09 Nothing.

3_02_20 TIN OWL opens his large, round eyes.

TIN OWL 264-10 Are you sure? I thought that you...

3_02_21 STRAW BEAR 266 Eh... Eh... Y'know... I was just thinking that I was once the handsomest Scarecrow... And am now I⿿m condemned to be a scrubby, no-account beast whose only redeeming feature is that he’s full of straw.

3_02_22 TIN OWL 267 That's not all you're full of... And what about me?

3_02_23 TIN OWL looks longingly at TIN GIRL.

TIN OWL I don't want to be a tin owl. I want to be myself!

3_02_24 GREEN MONKEY 268 Consider my case, please. The cruel giantess has made a monkey of a boy!

3_02_25 STRAW BEAR 269 I think your color’s rather attractive. I have never seen a pea-green monkey before.

3_02_26 GREEN MONKEY 270 What if I have to stay like this forever!?

3_02_27 A melancholy mood settles over TIN OWL, STRAW BEAR, GREEN MONKEY, and TIN GIRL.

3_02_28 STRAW BEAR 271 Dear me. What unhappy thoughts we have, to be sure.

3_02_29 GREEN MONKEY 271-01 What’s that supposed to mean?

3_02_30 STRAW BEAR 271-02 This is simply proof that born brains cannot equal manufactured brains, for my brains dwell only on facts and never borrow trouble.

3_02_31 STRAW BEAR (CU) 271-04 When there is occasion to think, I think, but I would be ashamed of my brains if they kept shooting out thoughts that were merely fears and imaginings, such as do no good, but are likely to do harm.

3_02_32 TIN OWL looks longingly at TIN GIRL but she does not know he is looking.

TIN OWL 272 For my part, I do not think at all, but allow my heart to guide me at all times.

3_02_33 STRAW BEAR 273 Thoughtless people are not unusual, but I consider them more fortunate than those who have useless or wicked thoughts and do not try to curb them.
