SEQUENCE 2_07 - "KU-KLIP"

2_07_001 Ku-Klip's WORKSHOP sits at the edge of the forest.

TIN WOODMAN, SCARECROW, and WOOT approach the workshop.

TIN WOODMAN (awed)

     Well, there it is...

2_07_002 TIN WOODMAN, SCARECROW, and WOOT climb the wooden steps.

TIN WOODMAN

This is where my life began.

For a moment, TIN WOODMAN stands, looks at the wooden door. Then he reaches out, hesitantly... Knocks on the door.

TIN WOODMAN

     Ku-Klip? Ku-Klip? You in there?

2_07_003 TIN WOODMAN peers in through one of the windows.

SCARECROW (OS)

Eh, he's probably off, snipping something... Eh, welding... Or something?

2_07_004 The door creaks open

TIN WOODMAN, SCARECROW, and WOOT look at each other.

SCARECROW

Well... Let's go in... It's cold out here...

TIN WOODMAN

Eh... I... Suppose he wouldn't mind... Since the door's open...

2_07_005 TIN WOODMAN, SCARECROW, and WOOT peer in around the doorframe.

2_07_006 INT. KU-KLIP’S WORKSHOP - DAY KU-KLIP'S WORKSHOP is filled full of mechanical paraphernalia.

TIN WOODMAN sighs.

2_07_007 TIN WOODMAN 092 The first time I came here… I remember old Ku-Klip carefully put my leg into that cupboard over yonder…

2_07_007b Against the wall is a CUPBOARD.

2_07_008 WOOT and SCARECROW glance at the indicated cupboard. WOOT shudders slightly.

WOOT 093 So… Do you think... Uh... Maybe we should wait for him outside?

SCARECROW (nervous laugh) 096 Sounds very good to me. Let's go.

SCARECROW and WOOT turn to leave.

2_07_009 TIN WOODMAN 097 No, wait. Wait…

They stop, nervous.

2_07_010 TIN WOODMAN stands, focused, listening. WOOT and SCARECROW exchange a nervous look. TIN WOODMAN walks over to the CUPBOARDS.

2_07_011 TIN WOODMAN reaches to open cupboard door.

WOOT looks on eagerly.

2_07_011b SCARECROW 097-01 Uh, wait. Uh, may... Maybe we shouldn’t… Uh?

SCARECROW flinches.

2_07_012 TIN WOODMAN pulls open the doors of the cupboard. Inside are shelves… and upon one shelf is TIN HEAD.

2_07_013 TIN WOODMAN

     GAHHH!

TIN WOODMAN into SCARECROW's arms

2_07_013b

     Woot reaches up to...

2_07_014 ...tap on TIN HEAD

TIN HEAD’S left eye opens, looks at Woot.

2_07_015 Woot draws back

WOOT

     Ewww…

2_07_015b TIN HEAD's other eye pops open, stares at crowd.

2_07_015c SCARECROW looks back and forth comparing TIN WOODMAN and TINHEAD

2_07_016 TIN WOODMAN 098 What? Oh, dear me! I… Uh… Good morning! You seem rather… familiar.

TIN WOODMAN takes off his crown.

2_07_017 TIN HEAD looks them over with supercilious disinterest.

TIN HEAD 099 Do I? Then you clearly have the advantage. I’ve never seen you before in by life.

2_07_017b TIN WOODMAN 100 Well, that’s… we do seem to… resemble each other.

2_07_018 TIN HEAD 101 We—what monumental nerve! For my part, I’m not anxious to claim kinship

2_07_018a TIN HEAD

to a common, manufactured article, like you.

2_07_019 TIN WOODMAN 101-01 Oh, is that so? Why, you dusty, old...

TIN WOODMAN raises his axe.

2_07_020 SCARECROW clears his throat.

2_07_021 TIN WOODMAN shoots him a dark look, then composes himself.

TIN WOODMAN 102 Yes, well, I… hmm. How long have you been… living in this cupboard?

2_07_034 TIN HEAD 103 I’m sure I don’t know.

2_07_035 TIN WOODMAN 104 Do you… eh, do have a name?

2_07_036 TIN HEAD 105 Not that I am aware of.

2_07_037 TIN WOODMAN bridles, but calms himself with an effort.

TIN WOODMAN 106 What do you do in that cupboard?

2_07_038 TIN HEAD 107 A little intelligent reflection

2_07_039 TIN HEAD

would lead you to realize that I’ve absolutely nothing to do!

2_07_040 TIN WOODMAN 108 Are you… happy in there?

2_07_041 TIN HEAD 109 Happy? What's that?

2_07_042 WOOT 110 You mean, you don’t know what happiness is?

2_07_043 TIN HEAD 111 I haven't the faintest idea whether it's round or square, or black or white,

2_07_044 TIN HEAD

or whatever it is. And, if you will pardon my

2_07_045 TIN HEAD

lack of interest in it, I will say that I don't care.

2_07_046 SCARECROW and WOOT gather around the cupboard behind TIN WOODMAN.

TIN HEAD 112 I’ll thank you to close the door

2_07_047 TIN HEAD

     on your way out.

2_07_048 TIN WOODMAN 112-01 I don’t

2_07_049 TIN HEAD 112-02 No, I don’t suppose you would. Good day.

2_07_050 TIN HEAD shuts his eyes.

TIN WOODMAN sighs… closes and latches the CUPBOARD door. He turns away, and gasps.

2_07_051 KU-KLIP the tinsmith stands in the doorway. He’s short, stout, his sleeves rolled up to show muscular arms. He wears a long leather apron, has a long gray beard and is bald. His ears stick out like two fans. Over his bright eyes he wears big spectacles.

KU-KLIP and TIN WOODMAN stare at each other… then KU-KLIP smiles… chuckles… laughs heartily.

KU-KLIP (chuckles) 113 Oh-ho! Who would have thought… here’s

2_07_052 KU-KLIP

my Tin Man… come to visit me. Oh, and with friends!

2_07_053 KU-KLIP

     Oh, Welcome. Welcome indeed!

2_07_054 KU-KLIP rushes forward and hugs TIN WOODMAN warmly. TIN WOODMAN doesn’t respond, somewhat at a loss. KU-KLIP holds him at arm’s length, looks at him.

KU-KLIP 113-01 Marvelous! Simply marvelous! You are so perfect…

2_07_054 KU-KLIP

You’re the ultimate proof of my skills!

2_07_055 KU-KLIP starts to walk down a circular staircase. After a few moments of looking at each other, TIN WOODMAN shrugs to SCARECROW and WOOT, and the three of them follow down the stairs.

2_07_055a TIN WOODMAN, SCARECROW and WOOT enter the bottom half of the workshop. Odd MACHINERY is scattered around, and there is a FURNACE. They follow KU-KLIP to stand next to a workbench.

2_07_056 KU-KLIP

Oh, but I forget myself… sit down. Sit, all of you and tell me why you've come!

2_07_057 KU-KLIP turns SCARECROW, examines him curiously, pats him on all sides.

KU-KLIP 114 You are truly marvelous, my friend…

2_07_058 KU-KLIP

But you would be far more durable if you were made of tin!

2_07_059 KU-KLIP

     Would you like me to?

SCARECROW 115 What?! No.

2_7_060

     No, indeed!

2_07_061 KU-KLIP warmly embraces WOOT.

KU-KLIP 116 Ah. Then it is this unfortunate boy you wish me to help?

KU-KLIP snips with some sissors.

2_07_061a KU-KLIP

If we begin immediately, I can

2_07_062 WOOT reacts, startled, pulls free.

WOOT 117 Wait! Wait! Hold on, we’re not here for me.

2_07_063 KU-KLIP

Oh, are you sure? 'Cuz, I could... Ya' know...

2_07_064 KU-KLIP

A little snip here and there.

2_07_065 KU-KLIP

     "Snip, Snip" song.

2_07_066 SCARECROW (impatient) 117-01 We’re not here to... We’re seeking information.

2_07_067 KU-KLIP is thinking.

TIN WOODMAN (OS) 118 Ku-Klip! Do you know what

2_07_068 TIN WOODMAN

     become of Nimmie Amee?

2_07_069 KU-KLIP looks at TIN WOODMAN, startled. For a long moment he thinks, then he sighs.

KU-KLIP 119 Uh, no… No, I don’t… But!

2_07_070 KU-KLIP (OS)

     I remember… She wept… bitterly

2_07_071 KU-KLIP

when you did not come back to her as you promised…

2_07_072 SCARECROW listens with interest.

KU-KLIP (OS) 120 She… went away…

2_07_073 WOOT listens to Ku-Klip. GLUE on a workbench catches his eye and he stands up on his toes to get a better look.

KU-KLIP (OS)

With some people… To Mount Munch, I believe.

2_07_074 WOOT takes the GLUE off the workbench.

KU-KLIP

     I haven't seen her since.

2_07_075 TIN WOODMAN 121 Do you know their names? The people she went away with?

2_07_076 KU-KLIP shrugs his shoulders.

KU-KLIP 122 All that she left was a bottle of Magic Glue…

2_07_077 WOOT holds the MAGIC GLUE.

KU-KLIP (OS)

     Taken from the Witch.

WOOT 123 What’s Magic Glue?

2_07_078 KU-KLIP 124 Oh! It’s a preparation with which to mend people when they cut themselves.

2_07_079 KU-KLIP

     Very handy.

2_07_080 TIN WOODMAN (suspiciously) 125 Ku-KLIP. What happened to the parts of my meat body?

2_07_081 KU-KLIP 126 Eh... Parts, Eh... Oh.

2_07_082 KU-KLIP

It occurred to me to piece them together, using the Magic Glue.

2_07_083 KU-KLIP

I thought I could… make a man out of them.

2_07_084

KU-KLIP 126-01 First, I pieced together the body,

TIN WOODMAN and SCARECROW look up surprised.

KU-KLIP

which worked perfectly. You would have been. Ah...

2_07_086 TIN WOODMAN becomes preturbed.

KU-KLIP (OS)

  Oh…

2_07_087 KU-KLIP 126-02 Well, it wasn’t easy… Some of the pieces didn’t match up well…

2_07_090 Still no acknowledgement from TIN WOODMAN.

KU-KLIP (OS) 126-04 When the glue… dried, well, he was quite an interesting fellow!

2_07_091 KU-KLIP (OS)

I called him Chopfyt. He… was interesting… but not very agreeable, I'm afraid.

2_07_092 SCARECROW and WOOT listen, facinated.

KU-KLIP (OS) 126-05 He complained… constantly… was a thoughtless assistant…

2_07_093 KU-KLIP

So, when he proposed, one day, to go off and seek adventures… I was happy to see him go.

2_07_094 SCARECROW 127 What became of him?

2_07_095

He… started off toward the east…

2_07_095a

Into the plains of Munchkin Country.

2_07_096 TIN WOODMAN listens, facinated.

KU-KLIP (OS)

And that was the last I saw of him.

TIN WOODMAN 129 It seems to me

2_07_097 TIN WOODMAN

that you had absolutely no business making another man out of my cast-off parts!

2_07_098 TIN WOODMAN (OS)

     After all...

TIN WOODMAN⿿S vehemence surprises KU-KLIP, who falls back into the fireplace. He seems unaware that his ample posterior has caught fire.

KU-KLIP (flustered) 130 It’s not likely that you’ll ever… meet the fellow…

2_07_099 KU-KLIP 130-01 He doesn’t know who he is.

2_07_100 TIN WOODMAN turns away from KU-KLIP.

KU-KLIP

    I never told him…

TIN WOODMAN 131-01 It appears that we need to travel on to Mount Munch.

2_07_101 TIN WOODMAN

But we'll will visit you again... Another day.

2_07_102 TIN WOODMAN squares his shoulders and marches out resolutely. SCARECROW and WOOT linger a moment, unsure what to do, then they follow.

KU-KLIP

     Okay... Pretty short visit...

2_07_103 KU-KLIP

You're sure I can't... Snip. Snip. Take a little tuck, or nip... or something?

KU-KLIP looks hopefully at WOOT, clacks his TIN SHEARS.

2_07_104 WOOT cringes.

WOOT

No.. No, thank you... Mister, eh, Cut-Klip.

WOOT hurries after Tin Woodman and Scarecrow OS.

2_07_105 KU-KLIP watches sadly. Then raises his head. Sniffs. Realizes that there's something burning. He looks around and finally realized that it's the seat of his pants! With a good deal of noise, he races around frantically, finally ending up with his posterior struck in a large, oaken bucket of water. As steams rises, KU-KLIP sighs contentedly.
